FLOW: Fusing and Shuffling Global and Local Views for Cross-User Human Activity Recognition with IMUs

Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors are widely employed for Human Activity Recognition (HAR) due to their portability, energy efficiency, and growing research interest. However, a significant challenge for IMU-HAR models is achieving robust generalization performance across diverse users. This limitation stems from substantial variations in data distribution among individual users. One primary reason for this distribution disparity lies in the representation of IMU sensor data in the local coordinate system, which is susceptible to subtle user variations during IMU wearing. To address this issue, we propose a novel approach that extracts a global view representation based on the characteristics of IMU data, effectively alleviating the data distribution discrepancies induced by wearing styles. To validate the efficacy of the global view representation, we fed both global and local view data into model for experiments. The results demonstrate that global view data significantly outperforms local view data in cross-user experiments. Furthermore, we propose a Multi-view Supervised Network (MVFNet) based on Shuffling to effectively fuse local view and global view data. It supervises the feature extraction of each view through view division and view shuffling, so as to avoid the model ignoring important features as much as possible. Extensive experiments conducted on OPPORTUNITY and PAMAP2 datasets demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the current state-of-the-art methods in cross-user HAR.


IP-UNet: Intensity Projection UNet Architecture for 3D Medical Volume Segmentation

CNNs have been widely applied for medical image analysis. However, limited memory capacity is one of the most common drawbacks of processing high-resolution 3D volumetric data. 3D volumes are usually cropped or downsized first before processing, which can result in a loss of resolution, increase class imbalance, and affect the performance of the segmentation algorithms. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end deep learning approach called IP-UNet. IP-UNet is a UNet-based model that performs multi-class segmentation on Intensity Projection (IP) of 3D volumetric data instead of the memory-consuming 3D volumes. IP-UNet uses limited memory capability for training without losing the original 3D image resolution. We compare the performance of three models in terms of segmentation accuracy and computational cost: 1) Slice-by-slice 2D segmentation of the CT scan images using a conventional 2D UNet model. 2) IP-UNet that operates on data obtained by merging the extracted Maximum Intensity Projection (MIP), Closest Vessel Projection (CVP), and Average Intensity Projection (AvgIP) representations of the source 3D volumes, then applying the UNet model on the output IP images. 3) 3D-UNet model directly reads the 3D volumes constructed from a series of CT scan images and outputs the 3D volume of the predicted segmentation. We test the performance of these methods on 3D volumetric images for automatic breast calcification detection. Experimental results show that IP-Unet can achieve similar segmentation accuracy with 3D-Unet but with much better performance. It reduces the training time by 70\% and memory consumption by 92\%.


Epileptic Seizure Classification Using Combined Labels and a Genetic Algorithm

Epilepsy affects 50 million people worldwide and is one of the most common serious neurological disorders. Seizure detection and classification is a valuable tool for diagnosing and maintaining the condition. An automated classification algorithm will allow for accurate diagnosis. Utilising the Temple University Hospital (TUH) Seizure Corpus, six seizure types are compared; absence, complex partial, myoclonic, simple partial, tonic and tonic- clonic models. This study proposes a method that utilises unique features with a novel parallel classifier - Parallel Genetic Naive Bayes (NB) Seizure Classifier (PGNBSC). The PGNBSC algorithm searches through the features and by reclassifying the data each time, the algorithm will create a matrix for optimum search criteria. Ictal states from the EEGs are segmented into 1.8 s windows, where the epochs are then further decomposed into 13 different features from the first intrinsic mode function (IMF). The features are compared using an original NB classifier in the first model. This is improved upon in a second model by using a genetic algorithm (Binary Grey Wolf Optimisation, Option 1) with a NB classifier. The third model uses a combination of the simple partial and complex partial seizures to provide the highest classification accuracy for each of the six seizures amongst the three models (20%, 53%, and 85% for first, second, and third model, respectively).


IoT-Enabled Social Relationships Meet Artificial Social Intelligence

With the recent advances of the Internet of Things, and the increasing accessibility of ubiquitous computing resources and mobile devices, the prevalence of rich media contents, and the ensuing social, economic, and cultural changes, computing technology and applications have evolved quickly over the past decade. They now go beyond personal computing, facilitating collaboration and social interactions in general, causing a quick proliferation of social relationships among IoT entities. The increasing number of these relationships and their heterogeneous social features have led to computing and communication bottlenecks that prevent the IoT network from taking advantage of these relationships to improve the offered services and customize the delivered content, known as relationship explosion. On the other hand, the quick advances in artificial intelligence applications in social computing have led to the emerging of a promising research field known as Artificial Social Intelligence (ASI) that has the potential to tackle the social relationship explosion problem. This paper discusses the role of IoT in social relationships detection and management, the problem of social relationships explosion in IoT and reviews the proposed solutions using ASI, including social-oriented machine-learning and deep-learning techniques.


Composing Knowledge Graph Embeddings via Word Embeddings

Learning knowledge graph embedding from an existing knowledge graph is very important to knowledge graph completion. For a fact $(h,r,t)$ with the head entity $h$ having a relation $r$ with the tail entity $t$, the current approaches aim to learn low dimensional representations $(\mathbf{h},\mathbf{r},\mathbf{t})$, each of which corresponds to the elements in $(h, r, t)$, respectively. As $(\mathbf{h},\mathbf{r},\mathbf{t})$ is learned from the existing facts within a knowledge graph, these representations can not be used to detect unknown facts (if the entities or relations never occur in the knowledge graph). This paper proposes a new approach called TransW, aiming to go beyond the current work by composing knowledge graph embeddings using word embeddings. Given the fact that an entity or a relation contains one or more words (quite often), it is sensible to learn a mapping function from word embedding spaces to knowledge embedding spaces, which shows how entities are constructed using human words. More importantly, composing knowledge embeddings using word embeddings makes it possible to deal with the emerging new facts (either new entities or relations). Experimental results using three public datasets show the consistency and outperformance of the proposed TransW.


Approximation by filter functions

In this exploratory article, we draw attention to the common formal ground among various estimators such as the belief functions of evidence theory and their relatives, approximation quality of rough set theory, and contextual probability. The unifying concept will be a general filter function composed of a basic probability and a weighting which varies according to the problem at hand. To compare the various filter functions we conclude with a simulation study with an example from the area of item response theory.


RES - a Relative Method for Evidential Reasoning

In this paper we describe a novel method for evidential reasoning [1]. It involves modelling the process of evidential reasoning in three steps, namely, evidence structure construction, evidence accumulation, and decision making. The proposed method, called RES, is novel in that evidence strength is associated with an evidential support relationship (an argument) between a pair of statements and such strength is carried by comparison between arguments. This is in contrast to the onventional approaches, where evidence strength is represented numerically and is associated with a statement.


Discounting and Combination Operations in Evidential Reasoning

Evidential reasoning is now a leading topic in Artificial Intelligence. Evidence is represented by a variety of evidential functions. Evidential reasoning is carried out by certain kinds of fundamental operation on these functions. This paper discusses two of the basic operations on evidential functions, the discount operation and the well-known orthogonal sum operation. We show that the discount operation is not commutative with the orthogonal sum operation, and derive expressions for the two operations applied to the various evidential function.


Goal Recognition through Goal Graph Analysis

We present a novel approach to goal recognition based on a two-stage paradigm of graph construction and analysis. First, a graph structure called a Goal Graph is constructed to represent the observed actions, the state of the world, and the achieved goals as well as various connections between these nodes at consecutive time steps. Then, the Goal Graph is analysed at each time step to recognise those partially or fully achieved goals that are consistent with the actions observed so far. The Goal Graph analysis also reveals valid plans for the recognised goals or part of these goals. Our approach to goal recognition does not need a plan library. It does not suffer from the problems in the acquisition and hand-coding of large plan libraries, neither does it have the problems in searching the plan space of exponential size. We describe two algorithms for Goal Graph construction and analysis in this paradigm. These algorithms are both provably sound, polynomial-time, and polynomial-space. The number of goals recognised by our algorithms is usually very small after a sequence of observed actions has been processed. Thus the sequence of observed actions is well explained by the recognised goals with little ambiguity. We have evaluated these algorithms in the UNIX domain, in which excellent performance has been achieved in terms of accuracy, efficiency, and scalability.
